License Testing (April 4th, 2026)

SAARC is hosting a license test session on April 4th, at 13:00 (1PM). You will have the opportunity to test for the technician, general, or amateur extra licenses.

What should I do before taking the test?

Before taking the test, please register at https://hamstudy.org, as we have started integrating their exam tools into our testing process. Before attending any exam session (in-person or remote, regardless of who is conducting it or with which organization it is affiliated), you will need to get a FRN through the FCC. A FRN is a unique number that the FCC will use to identify you for all future licensing business. If you have been issued any type of FCC license since the 1990s (including GMRS), you likely already have a FRN. Please pre-register for the session you will attend, as this greatly speeds up the check-in process on the day of testing.

Can I study on my own?

Absolutely! It is very doable to pass the technician license test with independent study alone. A couple of online resources to study include hamstudy.org and hambook.org.
Tips:

  • Make sure you’ve seen the entire question pool for the license class you will be testing for
  • Take practice tests until you can routinely pass with 85-90% before challenging the real exam.

What will I need at the exam?

Please bring the $15 exam fee (cash strongly preferred but cards also accepted), photo ID (military personnel, please bring your state-issued driver license or ID card), your FRN, and the code emailed to you when you registered for the session online (link above).

The test will take place at the SAARC clubhouse, located at 5513 Stewart Ln, San Angelo, TX 76904. If you have any questions about getting licensed, email us at ve.team@w5qx.org and we can help you through the process.
