Join Our Technician License Prep Study Hall in San Angelo (June 19-21, 2025)
We are pleased to announce a technician (entry level) license prep “study hall” to be held at the San Angelo/Tom Green County Emergency Operations Center (8485 Hangar Rd, San Angelo, TX 76904) on the following dates:
- June 19th, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
- June 20th, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
- June 21st, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
No RSVP is required to attend, but we would appreciate it if you email contact@w5qx.org and let us know that you plan to attend the study hall. 🙂
A license test session will be held at the SAARC Clubhouse on June 28th (Field Day!) from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Anyone who wishes to attend the test session is encouraged to pre-register online. You will need a FRN with the FCC in order to sit for any exam, regardless of who is offering it. We highly encourage you to create one in advance (just in case the FCC’s systems aren’t working the day of your exam). Click here for instructions on how to create a FRN.
In response to feedback received from previous classes, we are using a new textbook and multimedia curriculum, namely the Technician Class FCC Element 2 Amateur Radio License Preparation 10th Edition 2022-2026 by Gordon West (ISBN 978-1625951908). This book is available from Amazon (fastest delivery) or from the ARRL’s online store for the same pre-tax list price. The course multimedia materials are available on the ARRL’s Learn site (account required) if you wish to download them yourself (optional).

Important note: Comprehensive license test prep sessions usually take 20 hours or more. We will only have 10 classroom hours with you, so it will be imperative that you self study in addition to what we cover in class for you to pass the test. We encourage you to start studying before our study hall session. There are many online resources available to help you. We recommend Hamstudy (free, with apps available for Android and iOS for a small cost), as our VE team uses their exam software to proctor exams. If you use the practice test feature on Hamstudy, you’ll be familiar with the interface when you take the exam with us.
If you have any questions about the study hall session, please email contact@w5qx.org. Questions about our license testing session on June 28th should be directed to ve.team@w5qx.org. We want to see you succeed and earn your license! It’s very doable if you put in the effort! We’re here to help guide you along the way and look forward to seeing you at the study hall and/or license test session!
If you know anyone who is interested in getting an amateur “ham” radio license, share this article with them and invite them to join you at the study hall and test session!
